Customer Reviews

The helmet is indeed solar powered, and will work without batteries. However, because it requires power to properly operate (meaning detect light changes, turn on, etc), it will only work without batteries in a consistently very (very) well-lit environment. Fortunately it takes two AAA's and then it operates predictably even in a dark room.
The Good:
- detects light pretty fast, goes dark immediately
- the darkness adjustment works.
- I like the head-band tensioner, and the soft padding on the head-band. You can squeeze it onto your head tight enough to restrict circulation.
The Bad:
- detects end-of-welding a bit slowly (this may be a safety feature), you wait a second or two for it to go clear again. This is not that big a deal I guess.
- The up/down tension knob is ... well.. not good. It loosens right away, and the helmet stays up only if you swing it up and behind. Minor gripe, maybe some locktite will fix it.
- The darkness adjustment is a little funny - it causes certain areas of the LCD to go darker rather than the whole surface, also not a big deal.
Summary: It's good enough for my needs, and is certainly better than a plain welding shield.

Performs as expected, fits and is comfortable. Have only used outdoors and solar function for auto-darkening works great. Sensitivity adjustments based on conditions required and if you use indoors you must turn them on battery power. (push button) You can easily check if they are on by quickly looking up at a light source other than welding arc of course.
